What is “Upper Gotham?”
March 12th, 2010Once you go above about 155th street, you have long passed the part of Manhattan that gets any ink or notoriety. From Washington Heights upward, the neighborhoods are treated more like an outer borough than Manhattan. Consider this: The Manhattan Multiple Listing Service had all of 4 homes listed in the entire zip code of 10033, which has 181st St as its epicenter. MLS Manhattan may not be the best yardstick, as MLS is very small here, but we are talking about Manhattan.
Hudson Heights, Fort George, Inwood and Marble Hill are some of the nicest little neighborhoods you’ll find. We prefer to call them Upper Gotham, which is a nice colloquialism for the top of Manhattan. The area oozes with history, has incredible parkland (with HILLS!), and boasts names that are indelibly New York: The Cloisters. Spuyten Duyvil. Fort Tryon. Amsterdam Avenue. Once you spend a little time here, you’ll agree with the residents- Upper Gotham is the tops.
